Synapsis Shuffle (1999)

Synapsis Shuffle is a participatory “performance” piece comprising fifty-two panels, each with inkjet pigment transfer on polylaminate supports, sometimes with the addition of acrylic and graphite. Having premiered at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 2000, each time the work is installed, someone other than Rauschenberg makes the selection and composes the panels in groups ranging between three and seven.
