Slides (1979)

To make these works on paper, Rauschenberg arranged strips of fabric onto which he transferred imagery from magazines and newspapers using a solvent. The series title alludes to the vertical shift of the ribbons of fabric after the image transfer and before they were affixed to the surface.

All the works in this series measure 60-by-40 inches and are similar in their basic structure. There is a great variety among the individual works, however, due to the different colors, fabric patterns, and image choices.
