Gold Painting (1953/1955–56/1965)

The Gold Paintings are part of the series of Elemental Paintings begun in 1953 at Rauschenberg’s Fulton Street studio in New York. On a ground of newsprint, paper, and wood shapes, the artist applied gold leaf to create small works with highly tactile surfaces.
