Borealis Shares (1990)

Borealis Shares consists of benches, made with Lexan framed in brass, attached to brass panels that have been hand-painted with acids and salt patinas and silkscreened with photographic imagery—derived from Rauschenberg’s own black-and-white photographs—using epoxy inks. The back panel of these works employ the same technique Rauschenberg used in his series of painting on metal titled Borealis (1989–92). The Borealis Shares series includes only two works, published in editions by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles. While the imagery repeats across the edition, Rauschenberg’s gestural tarnish is unique to each artwork.
