Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, N.C., Rauschenberg: Collecting & Connecting, Aug. 28, 2014–Jan. 11, 2015

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation collaborated with curator Kristine Stiles, the France Family Professor of Art, Art History and Visual Studies at Duke University, for this exhibition conceived over the course of a two-semester undergraduate seminar, which she conducted. Stiles led the students in developing an insightful career-spanning selection of Rauschenberg’s work from the artist’s personal collection (now in the trust of the Foundation) placed in dialogue with art from the Nasher Museum’s collection at Duke University. Special highlights from the museum’s collection include works by San Francisco artist and filmmaker Bruce Conner and by Soviet nonconformist and conceptual artists of the 1980s and 1990s. Stiles taught her students valuable research methods by engaging fruitfully with the then yet-to-be-processed Foundation archives, providing this cohort of future scholars and professionals hands-on experience. Stiles and the students—Lauren Acampora, Katherine Hardiman, Emma Hart, Jacqueline Samy, and Taylor Zakarin—wrote essays for the exhibition microsite and catalogue published by the museum.
