Bleacher Series (1988–91)

The Bleachers are a group of manipulated black-and-white Polaroid photographs mounted on aluminum. The large-format film required a print coater that was manually brushed over the surface, without which the image would fade. Rephotographing his own photographs from the 1950s to the 1980s, Rauschenberg then unevenly applied the print coater with emphatic gestural strokes. To enhance the fading process, he subsequently exposed the prints to bleach, sun, and high-pressure water before mounting them.
