New Orleans, Louisiana

Mondo Bizarro

A performance company dedicated to environmentally responsive work in a region that is fighting to stay alive, New Orleans–based Mondo Bizarro creates original performances that are rooted in a particular sense of place and reflect the joys, desires, memories, and possibilities of the communities from which they are born. The group’s work ranges from collaborative ensemble productions to large-scale festivals, from digital storytelling to daring site-specific events. All of its journeys begin and end in New Orleans, with works developed over 12 to 18 months of gestation before and being performed at home, throughout the country, and across the globe.

The post-Katrina landscape in Louisiana has transformed the company’s members into artist-citizens, who create art-actions that visibly and directly alter the land they love. Its wide array of imaginative projects embodies the urgency of the current struggle, develops allies in collective action around saving our land and culture, and provides a platform for using art as a tool to understand what makes us commonly human and individually unique.
