Handbarrow

Appalachia

Handbarrow began in 2014 in the Southeastern Kentucky coalfields with a group of artists interested in carrying out new community-based work together. Today, Handbarrow is a collective of artists working with and in communities to tell the stories of Central Appalachia in a variety of forms and media. The group works to use art as a tool to more deeply engage people in their community around topics that are taboo or hard to discuss. They do this by holding workshops and by giving the community and fellow artists a space to participate in artistic work that is geared towards addressing these difficult themes.
